Anglia - Flensborg Fjord
Wintertime and Springtime
Only a few knew that in the mass exodus of Germans during the forth and fith century
AD also the tribe of the Angles came England and gave this country its name. Even
fewer people have been ever in the original homeland of these Teutons, the small
region called Anglia or Angeln. The province of Anglia is defined in the North by
the Flensborg Fjord (Flensburger Förde) a beautiful firth, in the South by the Slei
of Sleswick, a long and narrow firth, in the East by the Baltic Sea and in the West
by the outwash plain called Geest. It is a hilly region shaped by the Ice Age with
small villages that are dominated by agriculture. The peasantry is rich since the
soil is fruitful. As a specialty in agriculture they fence their field by so called
Knicks, hedges that grow on low embankments and are often trimed what means Knick.
This landscape feature also recalls the old celtic fields in Wales. These hedges
are very important for the microclimate of the soil. Since there is often a strong
and cold wind from the western directions these hedges protect the young crop. The
coast of Anglia is characterized by sandy cliffs and beech wood. In springtime with
the young shoots and the light green leaves it is a very charming area in vicinity
of the cities of Flensburg or Sleswick. The exploding nature in sprintime with the
flowering hedges and nowadays the yellow fields with the „Raps“, an oilcrop (Brassica
napus), produces a strong odor and demonstrates that the summer in northern Germany
must be short. Rooted to the soil, the native inhabitants are conscious of their
traditions and open-minded but it is nearly impossible to become one of them. One
finds not seldom stubborns and the small roads winding around their fields are documenting
their acquis in land. Maybe here exists a strong relationship with the Brit. But
if you have been there one time you came back certainly. More….
